Broken Nature: The XXII Triennale di Milano Statement

Let’s speak about Broken Nature, theme which animates the XII Triennale di Milano and that is the concept from which The Youth Design Day originates.

Broken Nature is also the theme from which it develops the bond between design and sustainability that guide The Youth Design Day 2018 edition.

Broken Nature celebrates design’s ability to offer powerful insight into the key issues of our age, moving beyond pious deference and inconclusive anxiety.

Paola Antonelli, curator of the XXII Triennale di Milano exhibition

The statement Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival” seeks to start a reflection on the role design has on the research for a new balance between Man and Nature.

That balance which is composed of complex and numerous connections that we have damaged as the time goes by, particularly when we talk about natural environmental resources.

They are connections that must be recovered; in this, design can be a fundamental element not only to provide creativity but also to develop strategies in order to reconsider our relationship with nature.

We have heard in the last decades, in all fields of design, terms like “organic”, “green”, “eco-friendly”, “sustainable”. But the goal Broken Nature exhitibion has gave itself is that designers can give these adjectives meaning and ability to act , encouraging new behaviors.

LET’S DISCOVER THE YOUTH DESIGN DAY IN JAPAN PARTICIPANTS!

As anticipated last Friday, here are unveiled the names of the first two participants in our contest The Youth Design Day in Japan 2018:

They are Florian Van De Voorde and Vincenzo Sorrentino, two young designer who deal with subjects that are very different from each other.

We want to leave you hanging a little more, so we won’t tell you all about them. You will discover it by continuing to follow us.

Florian

Florian Van De Voorde is 22 years old and comes from Belgium. He studies Interior Design at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent.

Let’s find out what inspired this young artist in his design and sustainability project, which will be presented in Japan. Here are his words:

“Last year – from august to october 2017 – I did my internship in Onbetaalbaar. This is a community of craftsmen (and women) who like to invite people to think about a more sustainable way about throwing away things and redefine what is thrash and what could be re- or upcycled.  During this internship I got the chance to develop my first prototypes. This formed the base on which I made these pieces.”

Vincenzo

Vincenzo Sorrentino is 25 years old and he’s Italian. He has a Bachelor in Design & Communication and a Master in Food Design.

Here, instead, is what inspired Vincenzo in his project on the theme of sustainable design:

“Everything started with this question: can the shape of the plate change my eating behaviours and my approach to food? My reflection and my research drove me to the conclusion that in the world different culture eat different kind of food but in the same round plate and so I experimented new shapes trying to re-create new rituals.”

Now that you know the first two participants, do not miss the others and continue to follow the Switch On Your Creativity Facebook-page for constant news and our site for more deepened information about participants!

The Milano Design Week 2018: SMASH!

We are glad to inform you that “The Youth Design Day in Japan”, the latest project by Switch On Your Creativity, was a real success and turned out to create lot of interest on its open call during The Milano Design Week.

Both the designers and the events’ coordinators (thanks to Design CircusFuoriSalmone and Asia Design Pavillion) were really engaged by the project and by its sustainability aim, so we were able to launch our open call in lots of the Milano Design Week events, in different city quarters.

The sustainability aim of this contest is that to combine the beauty of the design forms to the attention towards nature, always looking to the future of our planet.

The ambiental policy in Japan seeks to concentrate its attention towards nature and environment without overlooking the country’s need to carry on the course of its economical and technological growth. That is the reason why the ambiental cause is very popular and deeply felt in Japan.

Almost thirty were the candidacies we collected only during the different events, and others that which we received privately.

As the first stage has gone, we are now starting the final selection phase in which we are defining the design projects we will officially present during the second stage of The Youth Design Day: the 2018 edition of “Italia Amore Mio”, an Italian festival that will occur from the 21 to the 22 of July in Nagoya, Japan.

The third and last stage will be the projects’ exhibition that will take place at the Italian Cultural Institute in Osaka from the 3rd to the 4th of November.

The deadline for the candidacy is the 20th of May, so you have only few days to send us yours!

Open call to designers for The youth Design Day in Japan 2018

Our design idea in brief…
Our project concerns the realization of an exhibition at the “Spazio Arte” of the Italian Cultural Institute of the city of Osaka and will be officially presented during the 2018 edition of “Italia Amore Mio” in Nagoya, Japan. The exhibition refers to prototypes or projects developed by young Italian designers (age limit 35 years) towards the eco-sustainability issue.
The event is part of the fifth edition of Switch On Your Creativity powered by Asian Studies Group. In addition of being a reference to the Italian Design Day 2018, developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it embraces an expositive reason that takes creative inspirations from the Fuorisalone 2018.
Asian Studies Group is extremely proud to say that the project has been included in two stages of Japan’s most famous road show: “Italia Amore Mio!”.

The Youth Design Day is driven by the concept of combining design and sustainability, developed in parallel to the “broken nature” statement, the theme that animates the twenty-second international exhibition at the Milan Triennale.

Our goal is to a select limited small number of young designers chosen from among the most talented in Italy (maximum 20), who can propose interior, industrial, civil or product design projects related to the concept.
We hope that our project will appeal to designers whose projectsCOVER_Design e Pianeta_no cam comhave such a content as to turn out to be internationally innovative.

What is “Italia Amore Mio!”
“Italia, Amore Mio!”, is the biggest Italian festival in Japan, now in its third edition. This year it will take place in three cities: Tokyo (21-22 April), Nagoya (21-22 July), Osaka (3-4 November). The festival consists of 6 days dedicated to the excellence of made in Italy with over 60 special guests, including Emma Marrone, and many other prominent personalities from various sectors from both Italy and Japan.
In addition to design, it will touch many fields such as music – with jazz, rock and pop live performances – talk shows conducted by Japanese celebrities, accompanied by breathtaking choreography, interactive games and competitions such as Play and Fly to Italy. For the occasion, the municipalities will be equipped with artistic installations, among which people can attend workshops dedicated to various issues and enjoy
a huge selection of Italian food and wine delicacies.

Eligibility of projects
We are looking for young talents who have a great desire to experiment, get involved and deal with what have become the essential needs of today’s world: preserving the nature in all its forms and think at the future as the mirror of our present. It is from today’s choices in terms of environment and sustainability that we will understand how to design and build the future around nature and cities.
According to our policy, are allowed any graphic representations and prototypes characterized by a strong creativity and those which develop the combination of matter-ecology in an innovative way.

We will select:

Inauguration day – vernissage in Osaka

On May 26 has taken place the inauguration of the first of two vernissage organized by Asian Studies Group for the Contemporary Art section of Switch on Your Creativity.

The official opening was held in the splendid Osaka Festival Hall, at the presence of the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Stefano Fossati and the Consul General of Italy Marco Lombardi, as well as a limited number of selected guests.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Paolo Cacciato -scientific director of Asian Studies Group-, sees the participation of young Italian artists and a small collective of works done by students coming from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.

The link between these two clusters is the theme of creativity lived as an exploration through the senses, objects, places, experiences …, keeping the focus on Italian heritage and / or the city of Milan, seen as a meeting place between Western and Oriental culture.

Among the young Italian artists are there: Marco Randazzo, Gianluca Sità, Andrea Sbra Perego, Vittorio Asteriti, Margherita Martinelli, Elisa Vendramin, Sophie Mühlmann, Filippo Cristini and Giorgia Cavaliere, while Elias Bertoldo, Silvia Greco, Magda Chiarelli, Yuki Aoki and Saeed Naderi represent the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.

The Director Stefano Fossati and the Consul General of Italy Marco Lombardi has shown deep interest on the works selected by Asian Studies Group, so as to consider the possibility to postpone the closing of the exhibition beyond the deadline of June 15, moving it in Art schools and University in Osaka.
